                     ATCHAFALAYA BASIN

The Atchafalaya Basin has been an important part of our local history. The
Chitimacha Indians had many sites in the Basin. On the map these sites are noted
with a Chitimacha hut.

There are several spots in the Basin where Indian mounds are (were)found. We can
identify some of these sites. They are marked with a yellow star.

Father Gobeil went out from Charenton to visit several small churches in the Basin.
These are marked with a gold star

Many of the former Chitimacha sites, the sites visited by Father Gobeil, and many
mound sites were covered over when the Spillway was built in the 1940's. Today
these sites are completely under water. We can only guess where they were at.

Charenton also had an impact on the land surrounding the Basin. Numerous Catholic
churches were founded in the area once encompassing the parish of Immaculate
Conception. All of these churches were founded by Immaculate Conception Church
or by a church that descended from Immaculate Conception Church. These sites are
marked with a red star.
