Map showing location of 4 sacred Chitimacha trees

SACRED TREES were an important part of Chitimacha
life. One of the legends among some of the older
Chitimacha is that there Was a sacred tree on the present
reservation.

If anyone harmed the tree (s)he would go crazy. Rumor
has it that some persons tried to test that belief, harmed
the tree and did become insane.

We can challenge the sanity story but we do know that
four sacred trees marked the

Boundary of the Chitimacha nation.

One near Maringouin, Louisiana.

One east of New Orleans.

One at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

One at Cypremort Point.
